Making our community a better place to live, work, play and visit

Heritage Projects

Our organisation is based on the Union Canal in the heart of Edinburgh. We feel privileged to work to promote and look after this important scheduled monument, which is a great asset for our local community.

FCCT’s predecessor organisation, was involved in creating a website and app celebrating and documenting the important features along the Union Canal. We are updating and adding to the content – you can find it all on Union Canal Unlocked.

Scottish Canals’ website has a timeline of the Union Canal with some great historic photos.

Canal Unlocked: Where Volunteers Make Waves

FCCT is delighted to be working on a National Lottery Heritage Project, in partnership with The Sorted Project, who own and operate the Panacea canal boat.

This project is running from April 2024 to March 2027.

Our project aims focuses on activity on The Union Canal in Edinburgh, and particularly FCCT’s area of benefit around Fountainbridge. It has multiple and inter-supporting strands that we hope will culminate in new interest and engagement with the heritage of the Union Canal. We will be working hard to engage less represented groups and those with barriers to participation.

Project activities include:
– new digital and physical heritage information and interpretation, including the re-launch of an expanded Union Canal Unlocked website and app
– a Volunteer training and activity programme (including but not limited to boat crew and helms, vegetation management, greenspace maintenance and development, hosting and stewarding events, health walk leaders)
– community events from small workshops to larger theatrical productions, and the Edinburgh Canal Festival
